Who leads the expeditions? Experienced polar guides, sailors, and adventure specialists with decades of field expertise. We have been sailing into Antarctica for over 20 years.

What makes Icebird Expeditions unique? We blend small-group exploration with hands-on adventure—no cruise crowds, just raw discovery.

Do you offer custom expeditions? Yes. That has been our main aim from the very begining over 20 years ago and it is our main aim to this day. We design bespoke adventures for individuals and small groups.

How long are the expeditions? Trips range from 2 to 6 weeks depending on the itinerary and time of season. Some trips are by Yacht only others are a commbiination of Yacht and ship.

Is Icebird Expeditions suitable for solo travelers? Absolutely. Many of our guests join solo and leave with lifelong friendships.

What is the maximum group size? Typically 6–8 guests to ensure intimacy, safety, and personalized experiences.

Do I need prior expedition experience? No. We welcome beginners and seasoned adventurers alike. Training is provided.

What kind of vessel is used? A custom-built expedition sailboat designed for polar conditions and comfort.

Is Icebird Expeditions eco-friendly? Yes. We follow strict Leave No Trace principles and support conservation efforts.

When is the best time to visit Antarctica? November to March offers optimal conditions for wildlife, weather, and ice access.

Can I kayak in Antarctica? Yes. Our expeditions include guided kayaking through icebergs and glacial bays.All equipment is provided but you can bring your own.

Will I see penguins and whales? Penguins, absolultly. Whales, most likely. Our routes are chosen for rich wildlife encounters.

Is skiing possible in Antarctica? Yes. We offer ski mountaineering on untouched slopes for experienced skiers. In fact we believe that more first ascents have taken place on our expeditions than any other expedtion boat operating in the region.

How cold does it get? Temperatures range from -5°C to 5°C during the expedition season.

Are flights included? No. Guests arrange their own travel to the embarkation point.

Do I need travel insurance? Yes. Comprehensive expedition insurance is mandatory.

What is your cancellation policy? Details are provided during booking and can vary based on the expedition plans.

Can I join as a photographer? Yes We offer dedicated photography expeditions with expert guidance.

What kind of camera gear is recommended? DSLR or mirrorless with wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Waterproof housing is a plus.

Will I have time for creative work? Absolutely. We build in time for reflection, journaling, and photography.

Can I publish my expedition content? Yes. Many guests share their work through blogs, books, and exhibitions.

🧭 Safety & Training

Is the expedition safe? Safety is our top priority. We follow strict protocols and carry the required emergency gear.

What training is provided? Guests receive instruction in sailing, kayaking, skiing, and polar navigation. We teach you and encourage you to be part of the crew... you are not a passanger. This is an expedition.

Are there medical facilities onboard? We carry medical kits and satellite communication for emergencies.

Do I need to be physically fit? Moderate fitness is required. We tailor activities to individual ability.

What happens in case of bad weather? We adjust routes , sailing times and activities to ensure safety and comfort but remember we are going into wild areas. If you are concerned about conditions we canoffer you our sail/cruise options.

Do you offset carbon emissions? No but we are a sailing vessel and we use very little fuel.

Is wildlife disturbed during expeditions? No. We follow strict wildlife viewing guidelines.

Is sustainability part of your mission? Yes, This is why we sail. We beleive that exposure to wild places should be in smaller vessles or sailing yacht or by human effort. Exploration must honor and protect the planet.

Are you planning new expedition routes? Yes. In 2025 we have introduced new ways to visit Antactica by partering with a small cruise ship. This enalbles people who may not want to cross large ocean voyages in a sailing yacht to join the yacht in Antarctica.
